The Dalles Cascade Singers and The-Almost-All-Irish-Almost-All-Brass-Band present the annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser at St. Peter’s Landmark.

Co-owners Chuck and Debra Gomez have restored the art deco theater into a performing arts venue.  A band appearing on the evening of Feb. 22 necessitated the earlier starting time for the history program.

“The China Crew at the Seufert Brothers Cannery” is topic of the Saturday, Feb. 8 Regional History Forum at the Original Wasco County Courthouse. The photo shows the bunkhouse for Chinese workers, brought to The Dalles by labor contractors for the seasonal salmon runs.

Lookout towers will be featured in the first Regional History Forum program at the Original Wasco County Courthouse Saturday, Feb. 1. Forum begins at 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs courtroom of the 1859 courthouse, 410 West 2nd Place, The Dalles.

Forums detail original regional lookout towers for wildland fires, Chinese teams that spurred Seufert Cannery success, an ill-fated trip to Walla Walla that led to the death of a local jewish merchant and a deep dive into the Granada Theatre.

The Dalles Kiwanis Club hosts its annual Steak Feed Thursday after Labor Day, this year Sept. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sorosis Park.

The Story Behind ‘Chicken Charlie’s’ Island” is the topic of the first program of the Original Wasco County Courthouse 2024 history forum.  The program begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at the 1859 Courthouse, 410 West 2nd Place in The Dalles.  

Functionality and maintenance become greater challenges as years go by, and the life expectancy of this venerable structure turned out to be a mixed blessing.  It’s a lovely, substantial, well-built building, adequate for its time. But times change.
