History Forum Dives into the Legend of Chicken Charlie's Island
By Karl Vercouteren
The Story Behind ‘Chicken Charlie’s’ Island” is the topic of the first program of the Original Wasco County Courthouse 2024 history forum. The program begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at the 1859 Courthouse, 410 West 2nd Place in The Dalles.
Local historian Rodger Nichols will share the story of the familiar island downriver from Mosier. Nichols is a longtime local reporter, who edited the History Mystery page in The Dalles Chronicle for nine years. He has an unusual family connection to the story of Charles Reither, the real “Chicken Charlie,” and his research has uncovered some intriguing facts about the man and his island. Rodger also evaluates coins and currency in estates for local lawyers and invites people to bring old or unusual coins or currency for a free evaluation after the talk.
Admission to the program is free but donations are welcome. There is a TV monitor on the ground floor to serve those unable to climb the stairs. Coffee and cookies will be served after the program. ( Wikipedia Community Commons photo)
