This is bigger than Blockbuster Video
This Week in Gorge Entertainment
By Jim Drake
Check This Out: September is Library Card Month
The Library is one of my favorite places. And what I really like, besides all the books - is the access to movies. The younger generations here in The Gorge may not realize this, but if you add up all the movies available between The Dalles and Hood River libraries, you may get the Equivalent of 1.75 Original Blockbuster Video Rental Stores.* Yes, it’s true, we now have generations of people who have never had to “go out and rent a movie from a video store.”** But luckily, they can still experience a Blockbuster Night with a Library Card.
I found out this Movie phenomenon extends across the river in White Salmon, where I just borrowed two titles from a series called the Criterion Collection. Criterion makes a point of releasing “important classic and contemporary films,” and it’s just one example of how the simple act of getting a library card can open doors to other Video Stores. The announcement that the Hood River County Library has Reciprocal Agreements with Camas, Clackamas, Fort Vancouver Regional, Multnomah and Washington County Libraries will no doubt turn your library card into a one-stop regional Mega-card, with access to thousands of titles and extensive digital resources.
*Actual Equivalents May Vary
