Plans for this subdivision come after years of low housing stock in The Dalles. Some recent estimates indicate that as many as 500 housing units are needed to fulfill current demand. 

On March 6, 2025, the Planning Commission convened to evaluate a variance application for the proposed Jason Alford subdivision, a 29-lot residential development located at the terminus of East 21st Street. The applicant sought approval to reduce the internal block width from the standard 200 feet to an average of 132 feet, citing unique site constraints.​

Subdivision overlooking The Dalles Dam and just below the Oregon Veteran’s Home on Columbia View Drive will be constructed in two phases and will add 14 new homes to The Dalles housing stock. Approvals for site and development came from the City of The Dalles today, Nov. 19.

Jason Alford, 45, said he and his grandfather and former TD Mayor Donnell Smith began talking about the property overlooking the Adventist Health Hospital in East The Dalles about 15 years ago. Plans for the “high-quality subdivision” with 2,000—to 2,500-square-foot homes are now just falling into place.
