Traffic is at a standstill due to spun-out vehicles blocking lanes at milepost 223, at the top of Cabbage Hill. Closure may take a couple of hours.
The preliminary investigation indicated a westbound Kia Sorrento, operated by Samuel Burgus (33) of Umatilla, was slowed in traffic due to a detour related to another crash. As the Kia slowed and prepared to merge into the slow lane, a Dodge Ram 1500, operated by Miron Kosovan (23) of Kennewick (WA), failed to slow for traffic and struck the rear end of the Kia in the fast lane.
A Wasco County Deputy had a wild run-in this morning, June 1, at 2:33 a.m. when traveling on Interstate 84 near The Dalles, when a wrong-way driver almost hit their cruiser. It’s the second wrong-way driver on I-84 near The Dalles in the past 20 days.
The driver of a white Chevrolet pickup was reported driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-84 east of The Dalles at 4:11 a.m. The log states that the pickup was traveling at 40 to 45 miles per hour.
Three people were killed when a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 84 collided head-on with another vehicle resulting in a fiery crash just east of The Dalles on Nov. 30 at 5:24 p.m.
Blasting has been delayed for the construction of the MItchell Point Tunnel until Oct. 12. The project to reconstruct the historic tunnel is part of the overall plan to reconnect The Dalles and Troutdale via the 73-mile Historic Columbia River Highway.
