Terry Armentrout of The Dalles was getting after it early this morning, Tuesday, Dec. 15. The 73-year-old said he rides 16 miles on weekdays. Our Recent story about the 1947 championship run by The Dalles High school has prompted another, perhaps, fascinating detail. The Dalles produced an NFL guard who has been named in the top 100 to ever play for the Chicago Bears. Our super sleuth Sally Fasulo forwarded this information from Bonnie Osborne and Larry Hatch to CCC News.
You may know The Dalles captured the Oregon State Football Championship in 1947. And you may know about the team knocking the helmets off the Hillsboro Spartans in a 47-7 blowout in front of 14,000 fans in Portland to grab the trophy. But there was a whole lot more to it. This is their story.
The Forest Service and Klickitat Trout Unlimited are proposing a new site development in efforts of enhancing recreation opportunities at the mouth of the Klickitat River. Plans call for adding parking, prohibiting the launch of motorized boats, installing a restroom, and restoring natural vegetation, and eliminating erosion. The proposal intends to improve water quality, scenery, and vegetation in the lower Klickitat National Wild and Scenic River Corridor.

Steelhead are now distributed throughout the lower 100 miles of the Deschutes River. Anglers are reporting good fishing, with a chance at big B-Run Idaho fish that rest out in the first mile of the river around the mouth.

Wight said it was a tough year fishing for pikeminnow so far, noting he has to avoid a lot more pelicans with his fishing line when tossing his imitation bate off The Dalles bridge. Good days bring 20 to 30 fish. His best is 48 so far this season. Past years brought double that in a day’s plunking. At $5 to $8 a fish, it’s still worthwhile.

Thomasian was a dedicated varsity basketball, softball and volleyball player all through high school; she was also on the varsity cheerleading squad for a season. An excellent student and athlete, she enjoyed the sports she played, but softball was her niche, where she played second base and shortstop.
