The CGCC Board named Dr. Kenneth Lawson the new president of Columbia Gorge Community College at its Tuesday, June 20 meeting after completing a search during the past several months. Lawson was chosen from a panel of four finalists that were seeking the position. He begins the job on Aug. 1.

The public is invited to attend forums to gain deeper insight into the candidates that are applying to be the next president of Columbia Gorge Community College on June 5, 8, 9 and 12  in The Dalles and Hood River as the Columbia Gorge Community College board nears a decision on the institution’s next president.

“The board is committed to conducting an equitable, inclusive, and transparent national search that will attract a strong and diverse pool of candidates from throughout Oregon and the nation,” said board chair Tim Arbogast.

Columbia Gorge Community College distributed 75 Dell laptops to 10 public libraries in the college’s service area thanks to funding from the US Department of Agriculture Rural Development.

CGCC expands job training at Skills Center with the addition of CNC milling equipment through a grant funded by Google. “This equipment is part of the future of automated manufacturing -- everything from farm equipment to furniture to airplanes,” said the college’s president, Dr. Marta Cronin. “Our students can now master this technology before they enter the workforce, launching them into family-wage jobs.”

Scholarships will benefit four students enrolled in the college’s Early Childhood Education program this fall, said Wendy Patton, executive director of Columbia Gorge Community College Foundation. The awards will help students complete the program and enter the workforce.

The grant will enable faculty support for the Medical Assisting program. It supports the college’s plans to offer nursing students a part-time option, creating a three-year program in addition to the current two-year program. And it will jumpstart the college’s development of paramedic and EMT training.

The Dalles Art Center has teamed up with a group of metal fabrication students at Columbia Gorge Community College to fabricate and install a sizable metal display that will greet visitors outside as they approach the Art Center, on the corner of 3rd and Washington streets.

The grant to Columbia Gorge Community College Foundation, an Oregon non-profit, allows the college to obtain oxy-acetylene tanks and a transport cart for gas welding classes.

With this grant, Advanced Manufacturing students now have a welding jacket, angle grinder, a ball-peen hammer, vice grips and clamps. Construction Technology students receive a hardhat, headlamp and other safety equipment they’ll need for class and job site. Plus, all the students receive $160 to purchase work boots.
