Alleged Shaniko Shooter captured in Skamania County
KOIN 6 News is reporting that Logan Cantwell, wanted for a shooting in Wasco County, is now in custody in Skamania County.
Oregon law enforcement officials have been searching for Cantwell since Saturday, Nov. 13 It is alleged he fired on a deputy near Shaniko at around 8:45 a.m.
The deputy was fired upon a mile west of Shaniko near the intersection of Bakeoven Road and Highway 97 after several miles of pursuit on Bakeoven Road.
Highway 97 was shut down for several hours while officers from multiple law enforcement agencies collected evidence and documented the scene.
Cantwell was able to escape, and authorities believe that he fled to The Dalles.
On Saturday morning around 10:30 a.m., a special tactics and weapons team or SWAT vehicle was seen driving east on Interstate 84 toward The Dalles. Several other police vehicles with full lights followed suit thereafter.
Witnesses said they watched as a SWAT team entered a residence on Honey Dew and West Eighth streets in the Dalles at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday.
However, Cantwell was not arrested.
The group of officers later reconvened at Columbia Cinema, 2727 West Seventh St., and local citizens even purchased the team pizza.
Cantwell is a white, 23-year-old male, 5’09” with short strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes, and weighing approximately 182 lbs.
Police said Cantwell was to be considered armed and dangerous and cautioned the public not to approach him.
On Monday, Nov. 15, Wasco County District Attorney Matthew Ellis announced that Logan Cantwell was being charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, and Attempt to Elude.
On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the search for Cantwell turned to Corbett, Oregon. The hours-long search prompted a reverse 911 call for residents to shelter in place, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.
