Following the disappointing cancellation of a long awaited meet in the Wallowas, The Dalles High School Cross Country pulled together to set twenty-five personal bests at the Oregon City Invitational.

With mildly scorching temperatures, the teams’ times were just as hot for The Dalles, Henkle, Glenwood, and fellow Tri-Valley League team Estacada.

The Dalles High School Cross Country team went for a run in the mud last weekend in Tillamook. And today, Sept. 8, they host the Bridget Nelson Invitational for the first time at The Dalles Country Club. Races begin at 3 p.m.

Riverhawk Run on Saturday at Discovery Center provided a chance for students and the community to run together in what is a preview of times to come as cross-country track gets started this fall.

Walkers and runners, mark your calendar for Saturday, Aug. 27th as The Dalles Cross Country teams will host the Riverhawk Run/Walk at the Discovery Center at 8 a.m.

Shoes were poppin’ on the Fourth of July in The Dalles as runners lined up for the Rocket Run at Lewis Clark Festival Park at 7 a.m. Harriers put up some good numbers on a picture-perfect morning against the backdrop of the Columbia River along the Riverfront Trail.

You can run or walk one a 1 mile, 3k, or 5k along the Riverfront Trail, starting at Lewis & Clark Park on Monday, July 4th. All races start at 7 a.m. to beat the heat; you can register the day of at 6:30, or register in advance online. Click here to get the link.

On Monday June 13th, Mayor Rich Mays and The Dalles City Council honored six of the Riverhawk Track squad, in recognition of their high achievement at the State meet and their season- or two- of hard work.

Taylor Morehouse ended his senior season literally on top, with a fifteen-foot and state championship-winning jump in the pole vault, a half-foot ahead of Silverton’s Joel Rush. With the entire stadium clapping, he barely missed his attempts at 15’9”, which would’ve broken The Dalles’ record. Still, he was pleased with his season- with an improvement of over a foot over the past few weeks.

Riverhawks ran, jumped and vaulted at districts in Prineville on Friday and Saturday, May 13 & !4, to punch their tickets to the state championship for Track and Field at Eugene’s famed Hayward Field on May 19-21. Through the mud and pouring rain in Milwaukie on May 7, the team got to see the view from the podium several times, racing tough while anticipating districts next week. Both men’s and women’s teams placed second. Riverhawks are headed to Prineville for the Intermountain Conference District Meet on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14.

Last week, however, at The Dalles’ final home meet and at the Dean Nice invitational in Gresham on April 29 - all eyes were on Zoe Dunn’s outstanding triple jump, which smashed her personal record by nearly three feet and obliterated the school record set by Sharon Engle in 1998.

By far one of the most exciting races of the afternoon was Leo Lemman’s 3000m in Oregon City on Saturday, April 23. Consistent splits, with improved leg speed from racing the 400m and 800m at Hood River got him to the front of the pack, with a scorching time of 9:05, a 13-second personal best. Junior Fiona Dunlop wrested the PR crown on Saturday’s 1500 in Oregon City, coming in at 5:36, a 24-second, all-time personal best.

Work ethic leads to some personal records for Riverhawk Tracksters as they competed on Friday in Canby. The attitude was apparently contagious as the most memorable entries were from the athletes who were just plain willing to try. And try hard.

Since 1997, Scott Limbach’s 5K record of 15:35 had stood like a challenge - or a taunt - on the high school wall. Juan Diego Contreras obliterated the cross country time on Saturday at Lakewood High School at a smoking 15 minutes, 25 seconds, beating the 24-year-old mark.

With breezy and muddy conditions, very few Riverhawk runners saw their best times at the State Meet in Eugene this weekend, and yet both teams placed significantly better than expected.

TDHS Riverhawks Cross Country had a strong showing at IMC Championships, the boys taking first place. Both teams have made it into the state finals set for Nov. 6. Go Hawks!

It started to drizzle as the varsity girls were at the starting line of the Valiant Invitational. Striding out, jogging back: palms upheld to test their suspicion. “Rain makes you faster,” I told them as they peeled off sweats and checked the knots on their shoelaces.
