News You Can Use
Waiting to Go Underground
You may have noticed that the Underground Music Station had a flurry of activity earlier in the year, but no shows have been on the calendar since June 15. But there is a glimmer of hope in a recent online post: “Nothing planned for the rest of the summer, but will be picking it up more In the fall. Possibly Sept., but definitely in October,” sources say. Underground’s activity seemed to coincide with the subsequent closure of the storied River City Saloon, and it looked like Underground was in a position to fill that void.
Get Ready for Billy Bob
I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that actor Billy Bob Thorton is in a touring band and it’s probably time that I got acquainted with the music. The Boxmasters return to The Dalles in September, and that allows a few weeks of Billy Bob Research. I like to dig into his filmography, so here’s a few tips on Billy Bob Movies to get into the spirit:
Going Overboard (1989) - If you want to see how far he’s come in movie roles, you need to suffer through Adam Sandler’s first movie.
A Simple Plan (1998) - An excellent under-rated crime drama.
The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001) - Intriguing noir-style from the Cohen Brothers.
A Gun, A Car, A Blonde (1997) - This is a made for TV movie - probably HBO or something, and it’s actually not listed with the rest of his movies. A fantasy noir style appears as a dream sequence of a guy who is confined to a wheelchair. Features an appearance by the late John Ritter.
Chrystal (1994) - Intense! This is Acting. Released from prison, Thorton must return to the brutal Ozark Mountain culture and unfortunate crime, drug, and poverty situations, along with harrowing family issues.
CGOA gets ready for 2024-25 Season
Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is highlighting classical, folk, jazz, trumpet concertos and nods to 1980s pop culture with a production of “9 to 5.” Let’s give our full attention to their recent press release:
Our 2024-25 Season: Beloved Favorites and Exciting Discoveries
Each season, our goal is to bring audiences exciting, high-quality and varied performances that appeal to just about everyone. Our upcoming season is certainly no exception. No matter your musical taste or experience, every program has something you'll enjoy.
Love the comfort of familiar, timeless music? You'll love the Sinfonietta's performance of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, the towering Brahms First Symphony or the lush and lovely Symphony #8 by Dvorak. As always you can celebrate the holidays with Voci's Holiday Harmony concert and the Jazz Collective Big Band's tribute to 1920s jazz.
While we all enjoy the classics, equally exciting is discovering brilliant new music. You'll fall in love with Joan Tower's Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, Amy Gordon's Glimmer in the Leaves, or Amy Beach's groundbreaking Gaelic Symphony from 1896, the first symphony by a female composer to be performed by a professional orchestra in America. And speaking of brilliance, we're thrilled to feature two, outstanding Sinfonietta members as soloists. In November, Anders Foster performs the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto and in June, we feature Clinton O'Brien in the dramatic, Romantic Koussevitsky Concerto for Bass. That's not all! We're bringing back our popular Jazz Collective dances, the engrossing Chamber Music Afternoon and introducing Voci's “Folksong Tapestry” in April. Finally, Stages Musical Theatre will present “9-5: The Musical,” an easy-to-love Broadway adaptation of the popular Dolly Parton film.
You can buy tickets now to any or -- better yet -- all of these incredible performances. Just head to gorgeorchestra.org! Spread the word, tell your friends and we look forward to seeing you in the audience.

Seven-year-old Yngwie watched in awe as Hendrix blasted the audience with torrents of feedback and sacrificed his guitar in flames. The day Jimi Hendrix died, the guitar-playing Yngwie was born. Yngwie Malmsteen's career has spanned over 40 years with over twenty albums to his name. Author Talk at Hood River County Library
An Author Talk featuring Robert J. Shano, will talk about his new book “Never Too Old for War,” Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m., in the Hood River Library Reading Room.
About the Event
“Never Too Old For War” tells the incredible true story about an old Army foot soldier named Bob Shano, a Vietnam-era veteran and a native-born New Yorker from the Bronx, who was compelled by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to return to the ranks. But what makes this book so unique is that Shano had previously served in the Army as an Infantryman, left the military back in 1986 and, after being out of the service for 16 years, signed back up when he was 50 years old to serve alongside a new generation of Infantry soldiers, ultimately completing three combat tours — two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan — before being mandatorily retired in June 2013 at age 62. Over the course of his eleven-year enlistment, Shano braved bullets, roadside bombs, rocket and mortar attacks, and some of the harshest environmental conditions on the planet as he served alongside his fellow Infantrymen — most of whom were 30 years younger than he was. The author talk will be followed by a book signing and drawing for a free copy of the book.

Maryhill Museum of Art Hosts
Essential Gala Fundraiser Splendor of the River
GOLDENDALE, Wash. — Maryhill Museum of Art is looking forward to seasons ahead as it plans for its 2024 Gala: Splendor of the River.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the museum’s Cannon Power Plaza overlooking the Columbia River. This is the museum’s largest fundraiser of the year, and it has a profound impact on programming and visitor experience. Proceeds from the gala enable the organization to continue its free and reduced admission program as well as its monthly educational and public programming.
The gala funds will make possible much-needed updates to the Indigenous Peoples of North America galleries. The museum plans to build cases for newly acquired pieces to the collection, upgrade case lighting and presentation, add educational media, and participate in voluntary repatriation of lithic stones to the Yakama Nation.
Proceeds will also facilitate the Maryhill Museum’s 2025 featured exhibition: People, Pastorals, and Natures Mortes, featuring European and American paintings from the 17th to 21st centuries.
“Not only does this event make the rest of the year possible for us, it is a wonderful way to spend an evening with people who value art and the work we’re doing here,” said Amy Behrens, Maryhill Museum of Art’s executive director. “Our supporters are priceless, and we love bringing them together in celebration and in support of a shared goal.”
Gala attendees will enjoy wine, hors d’oeuvres and dinner in a beautiful setting, while participating in a paddle raise, an auction of Maryhill Splendor, an oil painting by plein air artist Cathleen Rehfield, and engage in a raffle drawing for a vintage gold ring with over 5 carats of diamonds.
