By Tom Peterson
The Dalles, Ore., Feb. 13, 2024 — A local hotel undergoing a renovation had some unwanted work done early Monday morning when burglars broke out a window and stole an ATM in the restaurant portion of the building on Feb. 12.
The burglary was discovered at the Columbia River Hotel, formerly the Shilo, at 3223 Bret Clodfelter Way on Monday morning and called into dispatch around 8 a.m., according to The Dalles Police Log.
The Dalles Police are actively seeking the perpetrators of the crime, said TD Sgt. Austin Ell this morning, Feb. 13.
“It is actively being investigated as we speak,” Ell said. “We have two detectives working on it today and that is one of our primary cases right now.”
The log states that Oregon Lottery equipment was destroyed at the hotel along with some flooring when the ATM was taken out of the building.
It is believed by some that the crime occurred after 1 a.m., Monday when the last patrol of the area was made by local police.
The log also states that due to the remodel, surveillance cameras at the site were not functioning.
In a stroke of luck, contracting crews that are replacing the siding at the hotel, were also replacing windows at the building and the broken window had been quickly replaced as of this morning, Feb. 13.
$1,000s in Quarters stolen
An investigation into the theft of $1000s of dollars in quarters from a local laundromat led to the arrest of a man from The Dalles on Monday, Feb. 12.
Laundromat operators at Wash n’ Shop in Cascade Square reported the crime to The Dalles police on Monday at 10:21 a.m., noting they had footage of the perpetrator.
Sgt. Ell said his department got a tip from Hood River Police that suspicious subjects were cashing $500 worth of quarters in Hood River.
Michael Andrew Barresse, 37, of The Dalles was then arrested by Hood River Police on a warrant, and he was lodged at NORCOR jail where he remained this afternoon on suspicion of burglary, first-degree theft and criminal mischief.
Significant Number of Burglaries in TD lately
Multiple burglaries left several fast-food businesses including Taco Bell, Dairy Queen and KFC rattled in late January as four businesses had cash registers and cash stolen in The Dalles.
Erik Robertson of The Dalles was arrested in connection with the string of commercial burglaries that occurred during the week of Jan. 28, according to a The Dalles Police press release.
Robertson was transported to NORCOR jail where he was charged with three counts of second-degree burglary, the press release states.
“Robertson was processed and released per standard jail procedures,” the release states.
