Sun-soaking Somerville warms up with some knotweed
The Dalles, Ore., Oct. 2, 2024 — Tom Somerville was hard at this morning using his trowel to remove knotweed, dandelion and cat’s ear from the bricks outside a home on east 19th Street in The Dalles.
“I started here in the sun,” he said, noting the morning chill sent him on a hunt for warmer climates within the yard.
The 77-year-old who lives on west Second Street near the former Red’s Trading post is along-time gardner in the area, and he has been working at this residence for 30 years.
He used to provide gardening services to multiple homes in his younger years.
“This is the last one,” he said.
The National Weather Service predicts lows in the 40s and highs in the 70s the rest of this week in The Dalles with a 50 percent chance of showers on Friday, Oct. 4.
