Question of the week: If you had one car to choose, which would it be?

Question of the week: If you had one car to choose, which would it be?

By Tom Peterson

The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 12, 2023 - Today’s Show in the Shade car show at Sorosis Park was smokin’ as locals came out to find their favorite flames and metallic cherry pop.

And with so many classics to choose from, could you just land on one if you were forced to take it home?

Hmmmm… So CCCNews hit the grass and pressed some flesh to find out which of these best in show were pulling hardest on their throttle rods.

The answers were fast and furious as locals pondered the question of the week. If you had one car to choose which would it be?

Alex Maia, 44, The Dalles and a few of his friends

“I am partial to the mustangs,” Alex said, but they like the Corvette,” he said referring to the boys.

They said the color and the green flames drew them to the 1963 Stingray, above.

Todd Whitlock, 60, The Dalles

“I like the old Impalas like this 1960,” he said. “They emulate the space race when we were competing against Russia, he said pointing out the wings on the back end of the vehicle and cool lines that ran into the rear doors of the car. “It was a cool era,” he said of vehicles built during that time period.

Tony and Maria Zilka, The Dalles

We ran into the couple on their electric bikes perusing the classics. Tony and Maria have been hard at it renovating their building at 201, 203 and 205 Washington Street. Pure Yoga recently moved into the building that corners with First Street. But when it came to classic cars, the couple were quick to pull the trigger.

“‘57 Chevy Bel Air,” Tony said immediately.

“‘68 Red Camaro,” Maria said.

‘49 Cadillac went rumbling by.

Enrique Vargas, 53,  and Maria Pacheco, 47, The Dalles

We caught Enrique taking a hard look at a way-lifted 4 x4 Ford while Maria looked on from a distance.

Enrique said it was one of his favorite vehicles at the show. Maria disagreed, saying the Orange 72 Chevrolet Chevelle was her favorite.

So the two compromised and took a photo in front of a ‘57 Chevy 3100 Chevy half-ton pickup. 57 owned by Clint. Hammon,75 of Battleground, Wash.

Jerry Anderson and Olivia Anderson, 13, The Dalles

The dad-and-daughter team was quick off the line this afternoon, choosing to get shaved ice as temps jumped about 90 degrees.

Olivia made no bones about her likes.

“1970 Chevrolet Stingray, green,” she said.

Jorge Zuniga, Erika Suarez, Araceli Alvarado were spicing up the Show in the Shade with some delicious Tacos Tumbras as multiple food vendors were on site.
