Progress Underway for Downtown Tree Project in The Dalles

The Dalles, Ore., March 29, 2024 — This spring, residents and visitors of The Dalles can anticipate a significant enhancement to the downtown landscape with the continuation of the City’s new Downtown Tree Project. The next steps of the project promise to bring a fresh wave of greenery and vitality to downtown streets.
Under the umbrella of the Downtown Tree Project, over 130 downtown tree wells adjacent to Second The Street and the Roundabout will undergo a thorough assessment and necessary action, including removal, replanting, pruning, and overall maintenance of trees. The City has entrusted The Davey Tree Expert Company with this crucial task, following the project’s award in September 2023.
Contracted from October 2023 to October 2026, The Davey Tree Expert Company will address various aspects of tree management in downtown areas. Key components of the project include:
Removal of 62 dead or dying trees for safety and aesthetic purposes.
Replanting of 68 new trees to enhance the streetscape.
Annual pruning of 132 street trees during late winter.
Bio Root installation for all new trees to promote healthy root growth.
Annual Deep Root Fertilization and Soil Care for all trees during spring.
Annual Drought Relief Watering from June to August, conducted five times each year.
“This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing our downtown environment,” says Director Joshua Chandler of the Community Development Department. “We are excited about the positive impact it will have on the community and look forward to seeing the transformation unfold.”
From Tuesday, April 2nd through Thursday, April 6th The Davey Tree Expert Company will be conducting tree planting operations along West 2nd Street and some side streets. Crews will be working the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. All streets and sidewalks will remain open during the process. There will however be intermittent parking spot closures.
