2025 Ruins Tuesdays Season Opener with Hillfolk Noir and Beard & Banjo
Tuesday, May 6, Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
"Built on more than 15 years of “junkerdash” tradition, Hillfolk Noir takes their acoustic guitar, double bass, and “anything you can find at a hardware store” sound and integrates driving drums and an electrified sound. From mountains of frontman Travis Ward’s ragged, spiral-bound notebooks this Boise, Idaho-based band tells earnest stories about the lives of lovers, law-breakers, and the lion-hearted. “If John Steinbeck owned a speakeasy,” said John Doe (X, the Knitters), “Hillfolk Noir would be the house band.”"
Trout Lake's very own Beard & Banjo opens the show!

Polyrhythmics
An Evening With Polyrhythmics
Saturday, May 31, Doors at 5:30 p.m. All-Ages. Outdoor Venue
Tickets are $22 in advance (click here,) or $27 at the door.
Polyrhythmics sound originated in Seattle's underground deep funk scene combining impossibly tight grooves with bold brass and hypnotic percussion that showcased elements of R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat which defined the instrumental group's early era sound.
Now on their thirteenth year as a recording project and touring ensemble, the band's sound continues to evolve following six full length albums, several EPs and live releases. The virtuosic musicianship and musical conversation built on a relentless touring schedule of the previous decade has led them to a brand of psych-funk that fills a room with an impending mood where anything could happen - sometimes evoking their brighter and cinematic Fela-influences, but also a more sinister and darker turn toward a more progressive sonic palette.

About the Show
What do Footloose, The Bridges of Madison County, The Addams Family and Legally Blonde have in common? They are all popular movies that became hit Broadway musicals. While the transition from film to the musical stage is now very common, it wasn’t always the case. One of the best examples is 9 to 5 The Musical, a rollicking and tuneful take on the well-known 1980 movie starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Local audiences will be able to get in on the fun when CGOA Stages presents ‘9 to 5 The Musical,’ opening Friday, May 9, at the Columbia Center for the Arts.
Just about everyone knows Dolly Parton’s crossover hit song “9 to 5,” which is featured in the musical. However, the stage show is not a collection of Dolly Parton’s greatest hits, but a completely original score. The musical premiered in 2009 and its score was nominated for several Tony Awards. The music covers a wide range of styles from country to pop and traditional Broadway show tunes, all with a huge amount of audience appeal.
Younger audiences might not remember the movie, which notably for its time highlighted workplace sexism and the frustration many women shared about working for egotistical and dishonest bosses. Of course that’s a serious topic, but the movie and the musical both share a wicked sense of humor and fun while still shedding light on an important theme that sadly remains relevant in 2025.
Emily Vawter, one of the musical’s leading performers said that “the musical is better than the film, because with Dolly’s music and lyrics the characters have more heart and depth.”
Described as an “hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era”, ‘9 to 5 The Musical’ is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Unlike many Broadway musicals, it highlights a strong female cast, making it a favorite with community theatres.
Local veteran actors Emily Vawter, Jennifer Harty and Cynthia Yoshida cover the original roles played by Parton, Tomlin and Fonda. Jim Yue plays boss Franklin Hart. The musical is directed by Ashly Will, who directed last season’s Bat Boy The Musical. After several productions using pre-recorded music, ‘9 to 5 The Musical’ will feature a live pit band led by musical director Duncan Krummel.

Portland’s world-renowned musician and singer-songwriter Tony Furtado is coming to Columbia Arts this June with his world-class trio featuring hammer dulcimer virtuoso Simon Chrisman, and Luke Price, 5-time Grand National Fiddle Champion and half of the Indie-Soul duo "Love, DEAN".
Tony Furtado is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter, and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on slide guitar, banjo (twice national banjo champion), cello-banjo, and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story). All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing about Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.”

In the summer of 1953, George and Charlotte Hay, former Broadway stars, bring their run-down touring company to Buffalo, New York, performing pared down versions of Cyrano de Bergerac and Private Lives while lamenting missed Hollywood opportunities. Chaos erupts when George’s off-stage affair with the troupe's young ingenue results in an unexpected pregnancy, prompting Charlotte to consider running off with their lawyer, sending lightweight George on a grief-stricken drinking binge. It turns out that Frank Capra is headed to town on a talent scouting mission looking to potentially hire the couple for his swashbuckling Scarlet Pimpernel epic if he likes what he sees. As a result, the Hay family -- including sharp tongued, hard-of-hearing mother-in-law Ethel, determinedly practical daughter Rosalind, and dashing stage manager Paul, Rosalind’s ex-boyfriend -- must work overtime to get sloppy drunk George into his Cyrano hat and nose. With the entrance of Rosalind’s fiance, anxious TV weatherman Howard -- one man with two mistaken identities -- and Richard Maynard, the wealthy lawyer hoping to lure Charlotte away to his mansion -- the confusion only intensifies. With a plethora of pratfalls, slamming doors aplenty, and backstage shenanigans, Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo is a fast-paced, hilarious screwball comedy in the old tradition, a throwback farce, a valentine to the stage, and the larger-than-life personalities that inhabit the world of the theatre.

Friday, May 16, Matthew And The Atlas / Kendall Lujan, Beautiful, Folk-influenced music with notes of Electronica and Alt-Rock, $15 Advance // $18 Day Of Show, 6 p.m., Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages
When it came time for fifth full-length 'Many Times,' Matt Hegarty needed to try something different. The Aldershot songwriter, better known as Matthew and The Atlas, was keen to follow up 2023's 'This Place We Live' quickly, jumping straight back into the studio at the end of that same year. Tapping up Bear's Den member and producer Kev Jones for the challenge, they approached 'Many Times' with a production style antithetical to its title: each song was to be recorded in as few takes as possible, stripped-back and direct-to-tape, with no overdubs.
Portland, Oregon based artist, Kendall Lujan embarks on her first full length album “Lucky Penny’ it is set to be released February 21st 2025. After releasing her Debut self titled EP last Spring, featured on official playlist for Spotify and Apple Music. Lujan also gaining attention from NPR’s Tiny Desk, MTV and winning the John Lennon Songwriting contest. Recently voted one of Portland’s ‘Willamette Weekly’ Best New Bands 2024. Portland Oregon junkbox blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Hillstomp’s memorable live performances tap into a magic that cannot be rehearsed, converting outlaws and traditionalists alike from skeptics into preachers.
