December marked the start of a new after-school opportunity for students at Chenowith Elementary School: Video Club. The club has proved popular, and twelve fifth graders are currently taking part in a CES Video Club in conjunction with OSU Extension.
Students couldn't wait to get started!
"On day one, the excitement level in the room was palpable,” said Mairead Beane Kelly, CES Dean of Students.
The club was made possible thanks to the school district's conversations with Lu Seapy at the OSU Extension Office. Bob Middleton from OSU Extension has taken the lead on curriculum and is starting from the basics. Students are learning things like file transfers, adding text to videos, changing sound levels, overlaying images, etc. The goal is to have students working on their own video projects sometime in the Spring to share with our Chenowith school community.
CES students have been working with the staff to film the morning announcements since the beginning of the school year. While the finished results were fantastic, the amount of editing and video workload added to staff responsibilities was substantial. Which is what brought about a pivot to include OSU extension.
This shift led to the creation of the Video Club and now students have the opportunity to learn how to film and edit video, all while bolstering their presentation skills with the announcements.
“While waiting for one parent to pick her up after the club, a student showed me three different videos that she had already edited on her phone,” said Beane Kelly. “Our students are already developing these skills outside of the classroom. It is exciting to build on their interest and skills to truly prepare them to be 21st-century learners and citizens.”
