The Dalles, OR — October 7, 2024 — Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC) is thrilled to announce the successful launch of its inaugural Men's and Women's Cross Country teams. The CGCC Chinooks made their debut at their first meet last Friday, September 27, marking a significant milestone in the college's history as it joins the Northwest Athletics Conference (NWAC).

Establishing the cross-country program is a testament to CGCC's commitment to fostering student engagement and building strong community connections. "Athletics programs support student engagement and success, create greater visibility for the college, and foster strong community connections," stated Dr. Kenneth Lawson, CGCC’s President. "We look forward to folding athletics into the fabric of college life."

CGCC’s Cross Country Coach Peggi Casady emphasized the ideal pairing between CGCC and NWAC. “CGCC's guiding principles of character, community, and comprehensive character development align closely with the NWAC mission. We look forward to competing across the Pacific Northwest. Our team not only enhances student life within CGCC but also strengthens community pride and inclusivity.” The NWAC is the largest community college conference in the country.

CGCC Foundation Executive Director Sue Davis announced that the Foundation Board unanimously approved a $3,000 grant to support the new team. “ The Columbia Gorge is the ideal environment for our Cross Country program to thrive. We have miles of picturesque roads, world-class trail running, and a hearty community of outdoor enthusiasts. We look forward to joining alumni, students, and local sports enthusiasts to support our CGCC Chinooks in this exciting journey as they compete in upcoming meets and community events.”

This weekend, several CGCC Cross Country team members

participated in the 3rd Annual Bob-A-Long at Sorosis Park. The Bob-A-Long, named after longtime high school cross country coach Bob Thouvenel, is an event that raises money for The Dalles High School Cross Country program.
