Bargeways' Waterfront Wednesday features Chris Baron; Gorge Entertainment detailed
Bargeway Pub & Catering’s Entertainment Weekly
By Jim Drake
The Bargeway Pub welcomes Chris Baron for Waterfront Wednesday, Nov. 15. at 6 p.m.
“I compose songs on the acoustic guitar, banjo or uke, or imagine them out of the air around me. Sometimes they are solo performance pieces, which is how I tour…” Barons said on his website.
“My listeners will connect with the simple heart of the three-chord song. Yet we are the kind of fans who purposefully seek out an ever-expanding world of song arrangement that dangles genre fusion, vulnerable dynamics, inventive chords, and whimsical song sections.
And that’s just the start of another great week of entertainment at The Dalles’ premier outdoor venue.
Here is the rest of the lineup:
Thursday, Nov. 16 - Al Hare, 6 p.m.
Friday, Nov. 17 - Rich & Blonde, 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 18 - Dave Tallman, 6:30 p.m.

Jacob Marley is dead, as we all know. What we don't know is that in his death, he has 24 hours to do the impossible: redeem Ebenezer Scrooge, the one man alive who is worse than he. Otherwise, Jacob Marley will be condemned to eternal torment, wearing the very real chains in death that he metaphorically forged in life. Guided by a mischievous imp called a Bogle, Jacob Marley sets out to redeem his former partner... and may just find redemption himself. Written by Tom Mula, Directed by Joe Garoutte.
Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol is family-friendly - audience age is recommended at 7 and up. There are moments of intensity that may be unsettling to sensitive and/or smaller children. Run Time Approx. 1 hr 45 min.

The music of Casey Neill & The Norway Rats combines high energy rock rave-ups and haunting lush acoustic reveries built around melodic narrative songwriting. The Norway Rats are a collective of Portland indie all star players whose credits include The Decemberists, Eels, Viva Voce and more. Neill has been touring with the band and solo throughout the USA, Japan, and Europe for more than a decade, performing his songs at venues such as Town Hall in New York, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, and the Newport Folk Festival. The new Norway Rats record Subterrene is a major leap forward for the band that No Depression calls "a milestone in Neill and company’s trajectory thus far" while Rolling Stone says " (Neill's) songs mask their complexities beneath a simple, singalong-worthy surface... these swimming waters have serious depth."
Saturday, Nov. 18, Petunia & The Vipers, Heavy Lonesome Country, $12 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages
Louis Armstrong was once asked what his favorite kind of music was, and his response was simple; “Good music”. Petunia & the Vipers’ sound may not sit comfortably in one certain genre, but “Good Music” describes it well. Hank Williams on acid… Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s Hobo junction… Avant-Country night club scene music… One of the best bands in the world today, of any kind… hillbilly-flavoured-swing inflected-ragtime-goodtime-thunderously rolling-one-of-a-kind-you- don’t-want-to- miss-this-sort-of-a-show… A new music that springboards off of music of the past and jumps into the present day, left with only echoes of the past… Something in between 1920’s and steam punk. It’s good for your mind… These are just a few of the words uttered by folks around the globe trying to pin down a description of all that is Petunia & The Vipers.

Gorge Sinfonietta presents The Glory of England
The pomp, majesty and beauty of English music have enraptured music lovers for well over a century. Now, local audiences can hear what so many have discovered, as the Gorge Sinfonietta presents The Glory of England on Friday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center in Odell.
Sinfonietta conductor Mark Steighner says that The Glory of England focuses on the music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “This was the so-called second English renaissance, when a new generation of British composers utterly transformed the musical landscape,” Steighner said. “Folk music was rediscovered and world music from as far as Japan found its way into the music of composers like Arthur Sullivan.”
At the heart of the Glory of England program is Gustav Holst’s epic suite for
orchestra, The Planets. “The Planets has been called the ‘best piece of English orchestra music ever written.’ It’s hard to overstate how powerful, innovative and influential it is, and has been on later generations of film composers.” The Planets is a musical description of Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. “Holst had just discovered astrology, so the musical identity of each planet is not just based on astronomy, but the mythical character as well.”
The concert also includes the Overture to Pirates of Penzance, Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March #1 (famous at graduation ceremonies everywhere) and selections by George Butterworth and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Steighner said, “All of our programs this season are accessible and easy to love. They’re all great concerts to bring friends and family to, especially those that might not have heard the Sinfonietta or other CGOA ensembles.”
Tickets are $25 adults ($15 for CGOA members), $5 for youth ages 10-17 and free for kids under 10. $5 tickets are available for SNAP/Oregon Trail card holders. Tickets and more information is available at

About the event
No two quilts are the same. As handmade works of art, each piece is completely unique on the surface. But beyond that, the originality expands, growing to include the person who made the quilt, how they made it, why they made it, and the journey it has traveled as it passed from generation to generation. Exhibit runs through Dec. 30.
