Gorge residents will soon have the unique opportunity to follow Pete Seeger's advice and listen to David Rovics in Hood River. Acclaimed folksinger/songwriter Rovics will play one night only on Saturday, Feb. 22, 7 p.m, at the Riverside UCC Church, 317 State St., Hood River. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The concert is a benefit for children injured in the conflict in Gaza. All proceeds benefit HEALPalestine.org, a nonprofit providing medical care to children injured in Gaza.

Members of the all-female band share two things in common - music, and the fact that each has experienced in their lifetimes an incident of trauma to their head, or brain. Making do with bass, drums and various percussion fills, Funky Cranium puts hip-hop beats and lyrics to current and past hit songs. But that’s not all, the band says look for a show in The Dalles in May for a Mother’s Day Special at the new River City Saloon, opening soon to continue the long-time storied venue tradition started in Hood River decades ago.
River City Saloon when it opens will be part of The Farm Stand complex at 301 E. Third Street. Construction on the new music venue is moving along as proprietor Joe Kirkwood is doing the work himself. There is still much to do but Joe said that he intended to get the neighborhood bar open asap.

Beatboxing, juggling, dancing, singing, music, and magic are just a few things that made Piers Morgan of America’s Got Talent call Alex “The total package.” This week the two-time Guinness World Record holder performs his 60-minute show at The Dalles Civic on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
“Professional Zaniac”
The “Professional Zaniac,” whoʼs been cracking jokes onstage for almost 15 years, zigzags between physical stunts and non-stop comedy. During the show vegetables are sliced in half by flying playing cards, flaming torches and bowling balls are juggled with ease and every audience volunteer leaves the stage in triumph.
A self-described “human cartoon,” his show isnʼt only for the kids in the family. “I try to make my show like the movie Shrek, super entertaining for the kids but there’s a whole other level of comedy for teens and adults,” says Zerbe.
Formerly of the award-winning duo Brothers from Different Mothers, Zerbe is a Hacky Sack World Champion, was voted The Pacific Northwest’s Funniest Prop Comic and is currently ranked Seattle’s 3rd Best Air Guitarist. Heʼs performed everywhere from cruise ships and comedy clubs to prime-time television in three countries, including “Americaʼs Got Talent!” and “Last Comic Standing.”

The musical boasts an array of beloved songs, including “Friend Like Me,” “A Whole New World,” and “Prince Ali,” along with new and enchanting tunes added exclusively for the Broadway production. About the Artists
Tommy and Saundra O’Sullivan operate O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub in Dingle, Ireland, which has gained a reputation for world class traditional Irish music. Guitarist Tommy O’Sullivan has a long history of touring with Irish bands and artists and has contributed to numerous recording projects. Saundra O’Sullivan has a strong background in choir and folk singing, which provides unique harmony vocals to the couple’s performances and recordings.
In 2018, the duo recorded an album “Safe Home,” with 12 original songs. In 2019 they recorded with Casey Driessen as part of Casey’s “Global Music Exploration Project,” and during lockdown they took part in Janis Ian’s “Better Times Project,” as well as creating 75 hours of music performance during their Facebook Live Sessions. The couple continues to work on the Irish festival circuits and plan annual tours in the U.S.

Black in the Gorge Scholarship Fund
LaRhonda Steele and Band will take us on journey through the rich legacy of African American music —from blues and jazz to gospel and soul. Known as “The First Lady of Portland Blues,” LaRhonda Steele is one of the PNW’s most revered rhythm and blues vocalists. Her powerful voice, deeply rooted in gospel and soul, has earned her induction into both the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame. As the music director of the Portland Interfaith Gospel Choir and the Portland Center for Spiritual Living, she embodies the spirit of leadership and musical excellence. Steele’s collaborations with legends like Gino Vannelli, Curtis Salgado, and Norman Sylvester showcase her versatility and artistry, making her the perfect guide for this musical tribute.
Saxophonist Eldon T. Jones will bring his signature smooth jazz sound, heartfelt melodies, and infectious groove to the stage. A masterful performer, Jones has graced national stages, from Yoshi’s (Oakland) to the Capital Jazz Fest, and shared the spotlight with icons like Earth, Wind & Fire, and Tower of Power. Another Portland treasure, he’s been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MLK Tribute and has wowed audiences at the Vanport Jazz Festival, Jazz Alley, and the Oregon Symphony’s Gospel Christmas

About the Black in the Gorge Scholarship Fund
The Black in the Gorge group saw a need in our community and established the first scholarship for Gorge residents who self-identify as Black/African American, Black bi-racial, or Black multi-racial. The BiG Scholarship will be available to all ages seeking to further their education, from graduating seniors to adults with financial need. Black in the Gorge grows the fund through various community events and appeals so that we can help more students with more substantial scholarships to give them more equal opportunities for higher education.

From the profound romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, to Dvorak’s lyrical 8th Symphony to Prokofiev’s quirky and playful music for the movies, the Gorge Sinfonietta’s “Slavic Fantasy” concert has something for every music lover. Focused on composers from 19th century Russia and eastern Europe, the concert is heavy on melody, beauty and audience appeal.

Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture on Romeo and Juliet was drafted when the composer was only 29, but the final version appeared ten years later. Highlighting some of the incidents and characters in Shakespeare’s drama, Tchaikovsky’s portrait contains what’s probably the single most recognizable love theme in all of classical music. Conductor Mark Steighner said “You could call it ‘radical Romanticism.’ That theme is over-the-top emotional, but we forget how striking it was at the time.”
Antonin Dvorak is best known for his New World Symphony, but that work’s immediate predecessor is even more tuneful and uplifting. “Dvorak’s 8th Symphony is by turns Romantic, dance-like, simple like a folk song and as exciting as a film score from Hollywood,” Steighner said. “It goes through many moods, but it’s always beautiful and easy to enjoy.”
The final selection on the Slavic Fantasy program is a suite by 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev. “We don’t often think of composers like Prokofiev writing movie music, but many of them did.” His Lt. Kije Suite is a selection of music written for a 1934 film, a comic satire about Czarist Russia, with a lot of slapstick comedy and absurdity. Like the film, the music is playful and almost never serious. “I think my favorite section is the final movement,” Steighner said, “when Kije is dying and his life flashes before his eyes, represented by all the different themes sort of colliding in his head.”
The Slavic Fantasy concert is one of three programs presented by the Gorge Sinfonietta this season. The final concert, called “Vacation Time: Postcards from a Musical Journey” will be in June.
