Partners come together for Community Garden Project Day at Heritage Heights Apartments
by Naibe Garcia
On Saturday, April 15th, Mid-Columbia Housing Authority, Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation, Columbia Gorge Food Bank and OSU Extension Service will come together with support from GOOGLE to build raised garden beds for Families at Heritage Heights Apartments in The Dalles, OR.
Heritage Heights Apartments is owned by Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation and provides 24 units of affordable housing for agricultural workers and their families.
Volunteers from the Master Gardeners and Tum-A-Lum will provide an onsite demonstration on how to build the raised garden beds. There will also be kid’s crafts led by a local artist, food, music, and more.
The idea for the project started back in 2019 with the plan to build in the spring of 2020. The project was paused due to the COVID pandemic.
This project is made possible due to a grant from GOOGLE, donations of lumber from Tum-A-Lum, and a donation of soil and mulch from Dirt Hugger.
“This will benefit our family to be able yo go out and plant with our children and be able to plant fruits and vegetables with them.” said one resident at Heritage Heights.
